Navigation from the Homepage

General navigation is had through entry into the website via three distinct information access tabs located on the center of the BR homepage. Users may select Introduction, Enter the Roadmap, or Baseline Document to access these information centers.

Introduction

This link from the BR homepage provides a user access to background on the BR program, a discussion of the BR objectives and a short description of each of the BR components (Crosscutting Areas, Missions, Disciplines, Risks, Research & Technology Questions and Tasks). New users are encouraged to spend a moment reviewing this information prior to navigating the website.

Enter the Roadmap

This link from the BR homepage provides a user with a direct link into the Bioastronautics Roadmap (BR).

Baseline Document

This link provides a user link to the PDF document, Bioastronautics Roadmap (BR), A Risk Reduction Strategy for Human Space Exploration. . This is the guiding document for the BR program.

Navigating the Roadmap

Upon selecting Enter the Roadmap, Users arrive at the opening web page entitled, Risks. Users are provided with three methods of searching the available information from this entry point. These methods include navigation through the Navigation Tabs, Current Selection Filters, or through utilization of the Search function.

Navigation Tabs

Information on the BR website may be accessed by selecting one of eleven horizontal navigation tabs located near the top of the opening page. The first eight tabs outline the main information centers of the BR, namely Missions, CC Areas, Disciplines, Risks, R & T Questions, Tasks, Deliverables and Processes. The remaining three tabs are provided to assist the user and include Search, Links and Help. Other methods of accessing information on the BR website include use of Current Selection Filters and use of the Simple/Advanced Search functions.

  • Missions
This tab displays values of some of the typical parameters used for mission planning purposes for the selected mission. Mission can be selected by clicking on the buttons at the top of the page (ISS, Lunar & Mars).
  • CC Areas (Crosscutting Areas)
Information found under this tab provides a means of sorting Risks and Enabling Questions according to pre-defined Crosscutting Areas. Currently there are five separate thematic areas including: (1) Human Health and Countermeasures (HHC), (2) Autonomous Medical Care (AMC), (3) Behavioral Health and Performance (BHP), (4) Radiation Health (RH), (5) Advanced Human Support Technologies (AHST). Project schedules for each of the areas are also available on this page.
  • Disciplines
Information found under this tab provides users a means of examining Risks or Research & Technology Questions as they correlate to 15 individual disciplines. Selecting any of these 15 disciplines also provides the user with a description of the nature of the associated risks.
  • Risks
The Risks web page provides users with the Risk data sheet of the selected Risk. Risk can be selected from the list on the left hand side of the page. Information available on this page includes name of the risk, it's description, it's justification for various missions etc.
  • R & T Questions (Research & Technology Questions)
Research & Technology questions (R & TQs) represent the most important issues that must be sufficiently addressed to either resolve or retire a risk, or to inform an accepted risk decision.
The page provides a list of R & TQs that can be filtered by Crosscutting Areas, Disciplines, Mission, Risk Rating or Risks. Note that since the Risk Rating depends upon the Mission type selection, the Risk Rating filter becomes available only when a Mission type is selected. (i.e. It does not say "All"). Upon selecting a R & TQ; from this list, the right hand side of the page will show you the data sheet for selected R & TQ for various missions.
  • Tasks
The Task tab contains information on the on-going/completed research experiments for solving Research & Technology Questions. These experiments also called "Tasks" are funded by NASA grants.
  • Deliverables
This page provides information about roadmap deliverables. Roadmap deliverables are specific products that have been identified as desirable outcomes or solutions to the R&TQ. They have date-specific expectations associated with them in order to meet exploration mission milestones.
  • Processes
The key elements of the Roadmap and their inter-relations are shown in the process flowchart on this page.

Current Selection Filters

The Current Selection filters offer more relevant results to be returned by selecting specific criteria in the filter pulldown menus. For example, if you want to look for all the risks in discipline Bone Loss with Priority 2 for ISS mission, you can go to Risk tab, select Bone Loss in discipline filter, select ISS in missions filter and select Priority 2 in Risk Rating filter. The Risk list below the filter will get filtered accordingly to show you all the risk titles that fit in above mentioned criteria.

Another way of accessing information is to conduct a simple or advanced search for a keyword, phrase or category. Search is one of the eleven horizontal navigation tabs located at the top of each page.

Search

Users may conduct simple or advanced searches to access Risk or Research & Technology Question information on the BR website.
  • Simple Search: A simple search may be conducted by inserting a keyword or phrase and pressing the Find button. Any search results returned matching the search criteria will be organized by Risk and Research & Technology Question and will include a link to that corresponding web page. Search results in the Risk category will show both the corresponding risk number and the risk title. Search results in the R & T Question category will show the question number, the text of the Research & Technology question and a link to that corresponding web page.
  • Advanced Search: An advanced search may be conducted by inserting keywords, phrases, and limitations on search options available on the Advanced Search page. These options allow the user to narrow or specify the search for Risks or Research & Technology Questions within a specific category. Any search results returned matching the search criteria will be organized by Risk and Research & Technology Question and will include a link to the data. Search results in the Risk category will show both the corresponding risk number and the risk title. Search results in the R & T Question category will show the question number, the text of the Research & Technology question and a link to the data.
Printable Views/Documents

The entire website content is merged into a PDF document called "Baseline Document". This document can be download from the homepage by clicking on the Baseline Document button.

The website offers many ways to print Risk data sheets
  • Under the Risk tab, Risk Data Sheets can be printed for the current "Selected Mission" or for "All Missions" by clicking the desired button.
  • Risk data sheets for all the risks are also available in PDF format on Missions, CC Areas, Disciplines and Risk tabs. Click on Get All Risks in PDF document right below the Clear Filter button on left hand side.

Search Tips

How does BR search work?

After you've typed your search words or phrase into the Search box and clicked on the "Find" button, BR searches it's database for matches. By default, Search looks for matches on all words in the query box. If you receive too many or too few results, you can alter your search method by using some of the options described below.

General tips to improve searching

  • Use Advanced Search tab for searching. It gives more options to fine tune your search.

  • Use multiple, relevant words in your search. Common words are used more frequently and are found on multiple pages. Increasing the number of relevant words will result in fewer results to review.

  • Use the "Exact Phrase" option in the Advanced Search tab if you know an exact phrase that applies to your search.

  • Use the the Simple Search - "Search Within Results" feature to search only within the current results which further narrows your result set.

  • Check the spelling of your words.

  • Do not use most commonly used words. Search ignores most commonly used words like and, or, in, to etc. Thus they don't add any value to the search. Also try to avoid punctuation marks and special characters.
