Bioastronautics, as a discipline, is the study of biological and medical effects of space flight on humans.

  • Establishes tolerance limits to the space environment and develops countermeasures to overcome them.
  • Encompasses research, operations, and policies related to the risks associated with human space flight.
  • Builds on collaborative relations across program offices:
    • The Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD)
    • The Space Operations Mission Directorate (SOMD)
    • Office of the Chief Health and Medical Officer (CHMO)
  • Focuses on the human as a subsystem of space flight.

The Bioastronautics Roadmap is the framework for identifying, assessing, and reducing the risks of crew exposure to the hazardous environments of space.

As a research management tool, the Roadmap provides information for making informed decisions about determining research priorities, setting exposure standards, and allocating resources. The Roadmap defines processes for accommodating new information and technology development as it becomes known, and guides the prioritized research and technology development that, coupled with operational space medicine, will inform:

  • the development of medical standards and policies
  • the specification of requirements for the human system
  • the implementation of medical operations
